“I always wanted to make music for DJs to play”
As hotbeds of dance music go, The Canary Islands might not be immediately on the lips of the many and yet, for Javier Carballo, regarded by many as one of ‘Spain’s best kept secrets’, Gran Canaria is home and a place of spiritual solace.“I have a lot of influences,” He tells me, “I grew up listening to Pop, Disco, R&B and Funk. In the 90s I started to listen House and Techno, and Richie Hawtin, Todd Terry and Masters At Work became my heroes.”
Since 2009, Carballo has quietly, patiently, built an ever-increasing fan base and garnered much industry acclaim counting his some of his heroes and others among his many high profile supporters. Signed to labels as diverse as La Vie En Rose, Tabla and more has seen this ambitious, technically gifted DJ and producer rise significantly through the ranks to now be a regular attraction at some of the World’s most recognised nightspots. Signing with Hector’s exciting new label, Vatos Locos has allowed Javier to play alongside the cream of the industry at World renowned events such as Sonar, CDV and Underground, where the Vatos brand has exclusive residencies, and release new music on a highly respected imprint. So whether it’s the early hours at Fabric, peak time at Watergate in Berlin or the sweltering heat of Romania’s Sunwaves Festival, Javier’s passion for quality House and Techno shines through. But it’s his own night – Under Your Seat – on home turf which he is most proud of. “It’s very important for me keep the connection with my island scene.” he says of his monthly return trips, playing at his own nights and for friends in the industry.
“I love the sound between House and Techno.”
Never one to rest on his laurels, Javier has been an active member of the underground dance scene both in and out of the DJ booth. Alongside his two labels, he also runs a successful club night on Gran Canaria as part of a wider touring schedule. After throwing parties on the island for 10 years, Underyourseat began a vinyl only label of the same name and Carballo released a 4-track EP (as TERMS) with production partner Carlos Sanchez (Lowwaxxx). Overall Music, was set up in 2010 to continue to share Javier’s vision for House and Techno. Initially a digital platform, after four years they opted to make the label vinyl only, which soon caught to ear of a few tastemakers. His time with Sanchez and Hanfry Martinez, with whom he also has collaborative work, have allowed Javier to quickly amass a formidable amount of studio craft and musical ideas. And as the world of the DJ has changed over time, Javier finds himself perfectly placed to thrive in a multi-faceted environment. Using his labels as a catalyst to grow his DJ career has intensified in recent years and comes as little surprise to the crowds of music lovers seduced by his strong tune selection and skills behind the decks. Now based in the UK, Javier continues to see his hard work coming to fruition giving him ample encouragement to climb the ladder right to the top of his profession.
